Meghan Markle and Prince Harry named their new daughter Lilibet Diana. He has told friends that he sought the blessing of his grandmother, the Queen. Lilibet was the Queen’s childhood nickname, used only by her parents, and a few of her closest friends. According to a friend of the Dukes, “He loves and respects his grandmother. For Harry these are two very important and meaningful names.”
Buckingham Palace did not receive any advance warning about the birth of the couple’s daughter, but Harry called his family to share the good news after their daughter was safely delivered on Friday morning. Harry and Meghan said in a statement on Sunday that their daughter will be known as Lili.
Princess Elizabeth referred to herself as a Lilibet when she was 2 because she could not pronounce her full name. The nickname stuck in te family until these days. Her father, then the Duke of York, affectionately referred to his eldest daughter as Lilibet and continued to call her by the name when he became King.
Yesterday Buckingham Palace said that the Queen was delighted at the news of the birth. Meanwhile the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took to Instagram to congratulate the Sussexes, using the name “Lili” but not “Lilibet.”
